CORAL GABLES (CBSMiami) – Unfortunate news came out of Hurricanes practice Wednesday.
Miami linebacker Marques Gayot sustained an injury during a closed practice from a helmet-to-helmet collision and had to be transported to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital for “precautionary reasons”.
Head coach Al Golden, maintaining a vigil at Ryder Trauma Center, along with perhaps a half dozen of Gayot’s fellow football players, told CBS4’s Gary Nelson that Gayot is “an outstanding young man,” and excellent player with “great discipline and hard work ethic.”
Golden declined to discuss details of the player’s injury.
The school released the following statement following the incident:
A University of Miami football student-athlete suffered an injury during practice and was transported to the hospital for precautionary reasons.
Gayot was used sparingly as a freshman but he has played in all three games this season for Miami, logging seven tackles including 2 for a loss and 1.5 sacks.
University of Miami athletic director Blake James has expressed confidence that Gayot is OK and fully responsive. He also said that the player’s family had been notified of the situation.
Witnesses at the school said that a Med-vac helicopter was seen landing on the field as well as an ambulance driving on to the practice field. The injured player was airlifted to the hospital.
Early reports said that two players were taken out, but the school’s official statement confirmed that it was one player.
Miami (3-0) was enjoying a bye week after defeating Nebraska 36-33 in overtime this past Saturday.
The Canes’ next game is a road visit to Cincinnati on October 1st, followed by a trip to Doak Campbell Stadium to face rival Florida State on October 10th.
UM has been bitten by the injury bug already this season. Linebacker Darrion Owens (knee) and running back Gus Edwards (foot) will both miss the entire 2015 season and receiver Braxton Berrios (knee) has yet to return from an injury that he sustained during Miami’s season opening game against Bethune-Cookman.
UPDATE
The University has released a new statement regarding the injury to linebacker Marques Gayot.
Linebacker Marques Gayot suffered a neck injury in a team period at practice today and was transported to Ryder Trauma Center. He has undergone a battery of tests and will be kept overnight for precaution. He will be placed in a neck collar and released tomorrow morning. He is expected to make a full recovery.
